Day 1: Choosing the Right Path: Kingdom Priorities

Seek First the Kingdom

Walking with Jesus Daily Journey - Day 1

Opening Scripture

"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it." - Matthew 7:13-14

Today's Reflection

As we begin our journey walking with Jesus, we encounter a fundamental truth that shapes every step of our path: the choices we make today determine our direction tomorrow. Jesus presents us with two distinct paths—one broad and seemingly appealing to many, the other narrow but leading to true life. This choice mirrors the daily decisions we face between worldly success and kingdom priorities.

Consider how Jesus Himself walked His earthly path. Never rushed, never swayed by public opinion, and always aligned with His Father's will. Even in the face of Satan's temptations offering worldly power and acclaim, Jesus remained steadfast in His purpose. This same Jesus invites us to follow His example, to choose carefully the mountain we're called to climb.

The story of Peter offers us a powerful lesson in this journey. Despite being one of Jesus's closest disciples, Peter initially stumbled when he tried to dissuade Jesus from the path to the cross. Jesus's response was unequivocal: "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns" (Matthew 16:23). This interaction reveals how even those closest to Jesus can sometimes confuse worldly wisdom with God's perfect plan.

The pace of our journey matters less than its direction. Many of us find ourselves exhausted not from walking too slowly, but from running quickly in the wrong direction. Jesus demonstrated this truth in His ministry—sometimes spending days in small villages, other times withdrawing to pray, often contrary to societal expectations. Yet each step served His Father's purpose perfectly.

Personal Application

Take time today to examine your path:

  • Consider the mountains in your life. Are they the ones God has chosen for you to climb? Just as a climber must carefully select their route up a mountain, we must thoughtfully choose our life's direction. The summit God has chosen for us might look different from the peaks the world admires.

  • Reflect on your current pace. Are you rushing ahead of God's timing? Remember that walking slowly with Jesus brings more joy than running quickly alone. Consider how Jesus never rushed between destinations but moved with divine purpose and timing.

  • Reflect on what energizes and depletes you in your daily life. Where do you find your deepest sense of purpose - in pursuing Kingdom work or in following worldly measures of achievement? Consider the difference between the lasting fulfillment found in serving God's calling versus the temporary satisfaction of chasing cultural definitions of success.

Prayer Focus

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us through Jesus the perfect example of walking in Your will. I confess the times I've rushed ahead on paths You never intended for me. Grant me discernment to recognize the mountain You've chosen for me to climb, and peace with the pace You've set. Help me find joy not in reaching the summit quickly, but in walking each step with You.

Lord, shape my definition of success to match Your kingdom values. Give me courage to stay on Your path, even when it differs from the world's expectations. May I learn to celebrate the journey of walking with You, finding satisfaction in Your presence rather than worldly achievements.

Today's Challenge

1. Find a quiet place for reflection and list all your current goals and aspirations

2. Examine each goal through the lens of kingdom values and Jesus's teachings

3. Spend 30 minutes in prayer, asking Jesus to reveal His chosen path for you

4. Identify one activity that truly brings you joy in serving God's kingdom

5. Consider removing one commitment that's pushing you toward worldly success but away from God's purpose

6. Create your "joy in the journey" list—ways to celebrate walking with Jesus, even when progress seems slow

7. Share your insights with a trusted Christian friend or mentor

Evening Reflection

As you end your day, consider:

- What steps did I take today on God's chosen path?

- Where did I feel tempted to follow the world's definition of success?

- How can I better align tomorrow's choices with kingdom priorities?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the privilege of walking with You. Help me remember that the narrow path, though sometimes challenging, leads to life abundant. Guide my steps, direct my choices, and help me find joy in following Your way. May each day draw me closer to Your perfect will. Amen.
