Has God ever dramatically intervened in your life plans, guiding you to follow His path instead? Sometimes what we perceive as men's rejection is actually God's redirection.
In our spiritual journey, there inevitably comes a moment when the Lord seeks our cooperation to allow Him to guide us in a new direction. Ideally, He hopes we would sense His leading, fully embrace it, and move accordingly. However, more often than not, He must intervene in our lives because we've become too comfortable and deeply rooted in our current course of action.
To capture our attention and set us on the path He desires, God employs several effective strategies. Just as we are warned not to be ignorant of Satan's devices (2 Cor. 2:11), we must be even more cognizant of the Lord's ways (Ps. 25:4). Understanding God's methods will result in us witnessing His mighty acts (Ps. 103:7).
Here are three primary ways God works to move us in a new direction:
1. Disruption of Our Plans
2. Dissipation of Resources
3. Dissolution of Relationships
Disruption of our Plans
Consider the Apostle Paul, who received a divine commission to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. In pursuit of his mandate, he targeted key cities in the Roman Empire. However, the New Testament reveals that on at least one occasion, God prevented him from fulfilling his objective. "They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia and were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. When they came near Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not allow them" (Acts 16:6-7).
Like Paul, you may have been heading down a certain path, attempting to do God's will, when suddenly you "hit a wall" and found yourself unable to progress. Projects and initiatives that once inspired you with grand visions and deep passion may have stagnated or even terminated.
When faced with such an impasse, it's natural to retreat to familiar territory. We see this behavior in the disciples after Jesus' death when they returned to fishing (See Luke 5:10-11; John 21:3). However, there was no lasting provision or peace in reverting to their past environment.
So, when God leads us out of our comfort zone and the way forward seems blocked, what's the solution? Some breakthroughs can only be accessed through persistent prayer. We must seek God until we receive clear heavenly guidance, just as Paul received his night vision of the Macedonian man, or the disciples heard Jesus' voice on the Galilean shore.
Dissipation of Resources
Another way God may redirect us is by allowing our resources to dissipate. Consider the prophet Elijah, who declared God's purpose for Israel: "As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word" (1 Kin. 17:1). True to his prophecy, a severe famine struck Samaria (1 Kin. 18:2).
During this time, God provided for Elijah, instructing him to hide by the Brook Cherith where ravens would feed him (1 Kings 17:2-6). Cherith, meaning "place of covenant," was where God demonstrated His faithfulness. However, the day came when the brook dried up and the birds stopped coming (1 Kin. 17:7).
Have you experienced something similar? Your streams of resources may have dried up, leaving you struggling to make ends meet. During such times, trust that the Lord will speak to you as He did to Elijah, guiding him to Zarephath where a widow would provide for him (1 Kin. 17:8-9).
Remember, where God guides, He provides. The place He leads you to will be the place where He feeds you.
Dissolution of Relationships
The third way God may set us in motion is through the dissolution of certain relationships (excluding covenant marriages). We see this in David's life when King Achish's heart turned away from him: "Then Achish called David and said to him, 'Surely, as the Lord lives, you have been upright, and your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight. For to this day I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you. Therefore return now, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines'" (1 Sam. 29:6-7).
An unexpected breakdown in a relationship can cause great pain, leading to feelings of abandonment and unanswered questions. It's crucial to understand that God sometimes sends people into our lives for a short season or even a brief encounter. These God-sanctioned, transitory connections, though not sustainable, serve a purpose in facilitating His plan.
When a valued relationship dissolves without apparent reason, remember this powerful truth: The Lord is directing the hearts of men as He desires (Prov. 21:1), making it easier for you to let go and move forward into your next assignment. Don't take it personally or become bitter, viewing it as rejection. Sometimes what we perceive as men's rejection is actually God's redirection.
Trusting in God's Good Guidance
You may not understand the current events in your life. Has God seemingly disrupted your plans? Have your resources dried up? Has a significant relationship disintegrated?
Sometimes, our Heavenly Father's ways don't make sense to us. Scripture acknowledges this reality: "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Is. 55:9). This is because the LORD possesses infinite knowledge and perfect wisdom. He is eternal, Almighty, and omniscient, seeing the end from the beginning and fully aware of the final outcome of all things.
Regardless of appearances, God is actively involved in our lives. He may occasionally interrupt our plans, causing anxiety due to a perceived loss of control. However uncomfortable we may become, we must trust that He is leading us along the best pathway for our lives. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye on you" (Ps. 32:8).
Trusting God at all times is an essential prerequisite for living supernaturally in His kingdom. Remember, sometimes what we perceive as men's rejection is actually God's redirection, guiding us towards His perfect plan for our lives.
