Opening Scripture
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." - John 13:34-35
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." - Philippians 2:3-4
Today's Reflection
In our journey so far, we've explored choosing God's path and embracing His divine timing. Today, we discover how these foundations transform our relationships as we learn to see others through Jesus's eyes of compassion and grace. The way Jesus interacted with people during His earthly ministry provides us with a masterclass in divine relationships.
Consider the story of Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10). While others saw a corrupt tax collector, Jesus saw a soul longing for redemption. When religious leaders saw a woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11), Jesus saw someone in need of mercy and a fresh start. Where others saw a Samaritan woman with a questionable past (John 4:7-42), Jesus saw a future evangelist who would bring her entire village to faith.
Jesus's interactions challenge our natural tendencies to categorize, judge, or dismiss others. He consistently broke social barriers, crossed cultural boundaries, and defied religious prejudices to demonstrate God's love. Whether dining with "sinners," touching lepers, or engaging with social outcasts, Jesus showed us that every person bears God's image and carries infinite worth in His eyes.
This transformed vision affects every relationship in our lives:
Family members we find difficult to love
Coworkers who challenge our patience
Neighbors whose lifestyles differ from ours
Strangers we encounter in daily life
Even those we might consider enemies
Jesus's example teaches us that true relationship transformation begins with seeing others as He sees them. When we grasp how profoundly Jesus loves each person—enough to die for them—it changes how we view and treat everyone we encounter.
Personal Application
Examine your own relationships through Jesus's eyes:
Think about the person you find most difficult to love right now. Remember that Jesus loves them so much He willingly died for them. How might this perspective change your next interaction with them?
Consider your daily encounters—the grocery store cashier, the delivery person, your child's teacher. Jesus sees each one as precious enough to leave the ninety-nine sheep to find the one (Matthew 18:12-14). How might this truth transform your casual interactions?
Remember times when others have shown you unexpected grace. Just as Jesus forgave Peter's denial and restored him to ministry, how might you extend that same grace to others who have disappointed or hurt you?
Prayer Focus
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing past my faults and loving me with perfect love. Forgive me for the times I've failed to see others through Your eyes of compassion. Transform my vision to see what You see in each person I encounter.
Holy Spirit, help me to:
Love difficult people with Your supernatural love
Extend grace as generously as I've received it
Look past surface behaviors to see heart needs
Remember Your sacrifice was for everyone, not just those I naturally like
Find ways to demonstrate Your love practically
Today's Challenge
Choose one difficult relationship and write down three positive qualities about that person
Practice "sacred seeing" by intentionally looking for Christ's image in five people you encounter today
Reach out to someone you've been avoiding with a gesture of kindness
Ask God to show you one person who needs His love expressed through you today
Write a note of encouragement to someone who might feel overlooked
Identify and confess any prejudices or biases that prevent you from seeing others as Jesus does
Plan one specific act of reconciliation or relationship building for this week
Evening Reflection
As you close your day, consider:
Where did I see Jesus in others today?
How did viewing people through His eyes change my interactions?
What relationships need His healing touch tomorrow?
Closing Verse
"We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen." - 1 John 4:19-20
